Background
Our client, the Bureau of Land Management, leveraged the Oracle platform, Hyperion, to meet their Enterprise Reporting needs for nearly two decades. When Oracle announced the end of life for Hyperion, BLM was required to migrate to a new reporting platform.
Challenges
Upon evaluation of various enterprise reporting platform solutions, BLM identified Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) as their new platform of choice. BLM required technical support for initial assessments, installation, and deployment. Their largest challenge was figuring out how to migrate over 25+ applications reporting data to the new platform, allowing users to build on-demand (ad-hoc) reports, and run over 800+ canned reports previously built in the Hyperion system.
Solution
NexGen completed an initial roadmap and feasibility assessment for the client and delivered a project plan for the initial platform deployment and delivery of over 25 applications reporting data to the new OBIEE system. NexGen installed the new OBIEE platform and Oracle reporting databases required, implemented AD authentication and role-based permissions, and configured all security-driven requirements. We worked closely with business and technical stakeholders across all 25 impacted applications to evaluate existing report requirements and to flush out data architecture and data design requirements.
We leveraged the Informatica ETL tool to support the implementation of nightly data loads from multiple data sources across several different database platforms into an enterprise data lake, or the ‘staging’ schemas. Employing transformation rules, including complex calculations, data cleansing, and change data capture, we load the data to the data warehouse for use by the OBIEE/OAS based BI reporting system.
Our team worked in a rapid delivery Agile environment to build out the reporting data models for each application, and develop a physical layer, logical layer, and presentation layer within the RPD that would facilitate the delivery of Subject Areas for end user self-service reporting (ad-hoc). NexGen promoted the use of Analysis reporting for end users and delivered pixel perfect BI Publisher reports for more complex reporting requirements. Working closely with Federal reporting leads, project dashboards were built to house reports and information for each application, and over 800+ canned reports were recreated in the new OBIEE platform.
